About the Frederic Remington Catalogue Raisonné
This Electronic Catalogue Raisonné comprises a number of fields on the individual pieces of art. Listed below are explanations of those various fields:TITLE: The earliest known official title is used. It is based on the title employed when the artwork was originally illustrated, copyrighted or exhibited, whichever came first as far as we can discern. Alternate titles follow.
DATE: Based on several factors, these include stylistic characteristics, subject matter (when related to one of Remington’s trips or commissions), diary entries, copyright information, exhibition history and illustration history. When a year is not definite the date is preceded by circa, abbreviated: "ca." When a work is known to have been rendered during a certain time period, the range of years is given.
MEDIUM AND DIMENSIONS: The primary medium is listed first and the support for the work is given when known. When the abbreviation "b/w" follows, the artwork is in black and white. Otherwise the work is in color. Dimensions are given to the nearest eight inch and hundredth centimeter; height measurements precede width.
SIGNATURE AND INSCRIPTIONS: These are listed in the following order: ul: (upper left); uc: (upper center); ur: (upper right); cl: (center left); c: (center); cr: (center right); ll: (lower left); lc: (lower center); lr: (lower right). We have retained Remington’s spelling, punctuation, and syntax in the inscription, and have not used "sic" to indicate errors therein.
CREDIT LINE: Indicates the objects current owner, is published according to the owner’s request, and is followed by accession number when applicable. "Private Collection" appears when the current owner did not wish his or her name made public.
ILLUSTRATION: Indicates the first publication of an artwork during Remington’s lifetime. Title of publication, date of publication, and the page number of the illustration are listed. Attempts were made to identify the printing process and type of reproduction, and the following categories are used: wood engraving, line engraving, photogravure, rotogravure, halftone, color halftone, lithograph, chromolithograph, and oleograph. The inscriptions, including signature, of the illustration follow, using the same abbreviations and order employed for original artworks.
PROVENANCE: Presented chronologically with the earliest owner first. Attempts were made to trace the history of ownership back to Remington but obviously this was not always possible. Galleries, art dealers, and auction houses are enclosed in parentheses, since their capacity as owner is often as a liaison between collectors. A question mark in brackets [?] indicates possible missing data, and that we are not certain of direct transfer from one owner to the next.
COPYRIGHT: If we have found a copyright record, either in the archives of the Frederic Remington Art Museum or at the Library of Congress, that an object was copyrighted during Remington’s lifetime, this information is included.
COMMENTARY: Additional relevant material concerning a particular work appears at the end of an entry. The data is varied and includes mention of dating, associated drawings, sketches, or Remington’s letters or diaries.
